The session will reflect on the impact, responses, and lessons learnt during the COVID-19 pandemic for workers in the fishing and seafood processing sectors.

Questions include:

– What has COVID-19 highlighted about the labour protection needs for workers in fishing and seafood processing? Especially in areas of occupational health and safety, access to social security and wage protection.

– How has labour migration been affected by COVID-19 in terms of labour mobility, regulations, and impact on workers?

– How have employers mitigated risks to their business and their workers?

– What responses have been particularly effective to meet the needs of workers during a time of crisis?

– What are the challenges facing migrant and women workers in the conditions in the fish and seafood supply chain?

A good catch for all: fair migration and decent work in the fish and seafood processing sectors

This session will focus on the role of stakeholders in labour protection and management of migrant workers, including deployment and recruitment, workplace inspections, and other policies and practices.

The session will address the following questions:

– How have government inspection and oversight functions been impacted and adapted to the challenges of COVID-19?

– What measures can employers take to ensure that labour conditions in the workplace are decent and that working conditions can be credibly verified by workers?

– What laws and mechanisms are in place, or are needed, to ensure fair recruitment and safe and orderly migration?

– How can South-East Asian countries enhance bilateral and regional cooperation to support safe and fair migration, and improved working conditions in the fish and seafood supply chain?

– What complaints mechanisms are available to workers, and how can stakeholders enhance cooperation to improve access to justice for migrant workers?
